The mission of the English Studies Institute (ESI) is to provide quality instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) for a variety of professional, academic, and social purposes. ESI builds bridges of cross-cultural understanding by connecting international students with Berkeley students and the larger
Bay Area community.
The English Studies Institute started in July of 2004 when the former UC Berkeley Extn. English Language Program was closed after 30 years as a UCB department. Former English Language Program instructors and staff worked together to create the English Studies Institute (ESI) in summer of 2004. ESI offers year-round English language skills classes to international students and supports UCB in offering language and cross cultural communication skills courses.
