What Is Winter Like in California? What You Need to Know When Beginning English Classes

During the winter snow, ice, and low temperatures are common across America. California, however, has weather that is a bit different from many other parts of the country.

Winter in California has something for everyone, whether you want to enjoy a warm, sunny day at the beach, go skiing up north, or take a hike and enjoy the beautiful mountains and deserts. The average winter temperature in California is between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 15 Celsius), with the climate growing colder the farther north you go.

Although the winter months also mean it’s time for California’s rainy season, with about 90% of California’s rain coming between December and February, the weather is still pretty comfortable—especially compared to other parts of the country! The infrequent but intense rains in San Francisco mean that a thick fog rolls in off the bay every morning, which is a special sight to see. Despite a higher chance of sporadic rain, there are certainly places where it will still be warm and sunny. Here are just some of the things you can look forward to.

You Can Still Go to the Beach Year-Round During Your English Classes

Many of California’s beaches stay open to the public throughout the winter, so you can soak up the sun and play volleyball whenever you want. Winter currents may make the ocean a little colder than in summer, but there are plenty of ways you can get active and enjoy the beach outside of going into the water. Additionally, it should be noted that because San Francisco and Berkeley are farther north than warmer cities like Los Angeles or San Diego, you may want to remember to pack a light jacket along with your bathing suit and sunscreen.

If You Want to See Snow in Your ESL Program, Head to Northern California

One of the most unique things about California is that because it runs almost the entire length of the United States, you can have the best of both worlds—sun and snow—during the winter. In fact, it’s possible to start your morning with a snowy ski run in the mountains and end it by watching the sun set on a beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

California has many winter getaway destinations that you can take advantage of during your intensive English classes. Many ski resorts located in Northern California like Lake Tahoe are within a 3-hour driving distance from Berkeley. If you want to take a break from the sunny weather, all you have to do is hop in your car or take the bus and within hours you can be skiing, snowboarding, or making a snowman in a wintry mountain landscape.
