Studying English is about much more than just learning a language. It’s an opportunity to meet interesting people and try out new activities while living in an exciting city. You will have plenty of opportunity to explore all the weird and scary attractions in San Francisco, Berkeley, and the surrounding Bay Area. Here are four things to look out for.
There Are Many Ghost Walking Tours to Choose From
San Francisco and Berkeley are beautiful places to take a walk, and you can make it even better by joining some ghost tours. A lot of these tours take place all year round, so horror fans will be able to enjoy them even if not taking English classes here in October.
This includes a tour around San Francisco’s famous Chinatown, the oldest in the United States. Or you could listen to ghost stories and visit haunted properties on the SF Ghost Hunt or Haunted Haight Walking Tour. You can even do some of these tours from the comfort of a Segway, which is a really fun way of taking a look at the city.
Visit the Winchester Mystery House
The 2018 movie, Winchester, is based on the story of a haunted mansion in San Jose, California, a short trip from Berkeley. Take the opportunity to visit this weird, old house at Halloween. It was designed to confuse ghosts, and it’ll probably confuse you too. There are 160 rooms, with windows in the floors, staircases leading to nowhere, and the number 13 everywhere—an unlucky number in the United States. You can take a tour of the house at any time of the year, but there’s a special spooky candlelight tour at Halloween!

Learn about Scary San Francisco in a Dungeon
If you like haunted houses then you’ll have great fun at the San Francisco Dungeon when you study English in Berkeley. You’ll be able to learn more about the city in interactive shows, including one about the famous prison on Alcatraz Island. This place is a full-time tourist attraction, and has many different shows to choose from. It’s also a good place to spend some time at Halloween because many people claim to have heard strange voices and noises in the building. Do you dare to experience it for yourself?
